Mary’s Story
Jim Kongwa, our field director from Zambia, recently told us about Mary. She has an amazing story of God’s provision through Kids Alive!
She was admitted into Kids Alive Zambia (KAZ) as a young girl after her mother ran away from her abusive husband and carried her 3 kids with her (she eloped with another man). She dumped Mary and her brother in a Catholic orphanage in Lusaka and went away with her youngest baby. The brother died 2 weeks later in the orphanage. Eventually Mary and 2 other kids were transferred to the Kids Alive children’s home, due to horrid overcrowding at the Catholic orphanage.
Mary started pre-school in Kids Alive in 2001 and eventually completed secondary school.
After completing high school in 2013, she was discharged from the residential programme.
She got good results that would have enabled her to fulfil her desire to train as an accountant or a teacher but unfortunately Kids Alive Zambia didn't have the money to pay for her college fees.
A few months ago Mary was about to apply for a Scholarship funded by Kids Alive Canada but became quite ill. For the last couple of months, she has been living back in the KAZ Chikondi children’s village, undergoing treatment at the local government clinic.
We praise God that a Christian lady who owns a private school has offered Mary a job as an assistant teacher (due to her being untrained) and she is planning (with her sister who is a pastor) to eventually sponsor Mary to go to college. In the meantime, they have secured private accommodation for her and she will be leaving Chikondi soon.
Please rejoice with us as we see Mary fulfilling her potential in God, and more Zambians taking up the responsibility of caring for their own.
